What does an eCommerce site need?
The problem with e-commerce websites is they generally take
a lot more work than a stand alone brochure website, which means the budget
needs to be there. Most small businesses will not invest 10+K on a website
designer so they usually try to go with the cheapest possible solutions
available.
Sometimes they will buy a template and get a developer to
design it based on what the client thinks looks good, which is why you see so
many bad e-commerce websites. The site then generally looks like a botched up
template, and it shouldnt look like a template at all.
In an ideal world you need to hire one person who is great
at design & development, but these people are usually very pricey, and it's
difficult to find. Some clients may choose to get a designer to design the
website and then have a developer put it together, however.. the developer is
often color, spacially and font-blind. So the key here is to have the designer
manage the developer's progress and follow through with any corrections that
need to be made. The designer needs to be involved at every step of the way.
Clients often fail to do this as well because it also costs more.
A worse scenario is when a client finishes a website that a
developer botched up aesthetically, or even in the programming because they
didn't choose the right developer or have the right amount of cash to put into
the site.. and the client then decides to hire a designer to "fix it
up". I see huge issues here. How do you tell a client, that their new
online business is built with old technology, isn't mobile ready, design is
broken, and everything is a complete mess? I recently had a client who knows
nothing about the internet and marketing, decided to have a website built
really cheaply using a template the developer had. He then asked me how he can
market it. When I saw it.. my heart sank for the poor guy. He had wasted 6
months on a half assed website with a lot of technical issues. There was many
design flaws, the branding was all off and wouldn't work on smaller scales, too
many elements and too many colors. Not to mention the font on the logo wasn't
legible at all. The other issue is that the website was NOT AT ALL put together
to work on mobile! His concept would have mainly worked on mobile... but
because he hired someone on the cheap.. the developer wasn't going to waste
time educating the client what is best to do, what hes missing, they just want
the money quick and run. How do you tell a guy he just wasted time, money,
resources etc on something so garbage?
In any case.. what makes a good design... that is all
subjective but I will put a list:
• Branding is #1. Have all the elements, fonts, colors, any
design flairs, even the style of messaging/tone—down BEFORE anything else.
• Be consistent with navigation.. top navigation is standard
now.
• Footers need to have a lot more information to make it
easier
• Website NEEDS to be mobile friendly!
• Typography... typography... typography! A bad design is
clear when proper typographic rules haven't been followed
• Pick 2 - 3 colors and stick to them!
• Photography — Don't use boxed photos.. those are hideous!
Spend the money to properly photoshop each product
• Don't use photoshop effects that date back to early 2000's
(a good designer would know which ones to use and which ones not to.)
• Buttons need to be consistent, important ones can be
larger than the not so important ones.
• The products in a shopping cart need to be big and clear.
I want to know all the details of this product being sold.
• Searches.. proper hierarchy of products
• I also personally don't like black text on sites (personal
preference).. black text makes things look too stark and unfinished
• 16pt font! Don't make me squint.
• Use visual hierarchy on every page. What's the most
important thing? Don't let my eye fly around the screen.
And there is a ton more.. but I think that is enough for
now.

How to increase sales online?
If you own an e commerce website, one of your primary
concerns is always going to be how to increase sales. Though the amount of
traffic that you can direct to your site is obviously going to play a major
role, how your e commerce site is actually designed is equally important.

SEO is your responsibility
Why SEO matters
Search Engine Optimization is critical for eCommerce sites. Think of this: if you are not will to learn about this, but your online competitor is, who do you think will get the lion's share of the business?
SEO for eCommerce is a complex topic. Just tackle it one step at a time. A little done each day will work wonders for your incomes.
One book I'm reading right now is called "Convert: designing websites to increase traffic and conversion". Probably required reading for anyone that wants to be the best of the best.
Think of it this way: The good news is that most do not want to do the work of SEO, so competitive advantage is yours for the taking... at least at this early stage of eCommerce in the history of the Internet.

Is the easiest eCommerce website solution really for you?
When designing a platform for eCommerce websites...
A design team has choices to make.
1) Make eCommerce websites easy for the masses to make? This option loses powerful options! Websites are limited.2) Make eCommerce websites a bit more difficult to make, and maintain a powerful solution. Websites are unlimited.
We made anaZana as easy as it can be, without sacrificing SEO and keeping the powerful options to create what you want.
anaZana has a short learning curve (an hour or two for most), and in return you get a much more powerful website. To flex your web presence muscle, you need the base that anaZana provides.
Yes, you can get a 'vanilla' website builder, but no, it won't be as powerful as anaZana. "Get the power of the Z" (copyright 2012). Use anaZana instead.
Choose your own fonts?
Why it's best NOT to choose your own fonts
With a few exceptions, you should use the fonts built into the anaZana template (this also applies to the blank template). This is because there are certain fonts that are universally read the same way on various browsers.
If you choose your own fonts, you run the risk of odd effects in different browsers: your site will not look professional.
If you do use specialized fonts, do so only on a limited basis, within a confined area of your site. Still, this is risky.

How multiple websites can boost your eCommerce efforts and increase sales
Multiple websites can increase sales
One strategy I've learned from having a bird's eye view of the anaZana solution (because I'm an owner, and have access to proprietary statistics), is that as a company grows, they tend to publish more websites.
Why would they create more eCommerce sites?
Niche marketing can bring more sales. Say for instance, you sell real estate. Are you depending upon you site provided by your Realtor? If so, I can assure you, you are losing a LOT of money! Here's why... you have a 'vanilla' site which all the other agents in your company also have. The only way to get ranked higher in Google is through your own networking efforts. This is not bad, it is just limited.
Now consider this: you now have two more sites (using anaZana of course!), and they say roughly the same thing as your vanilla site does, only they are more focused on particular areas of your business, and they have different keywords and meta tags. You could have one site covering styles of homes you offer. Another for a particular market segment. You get the idea.
The result? Your market exposure now increases many fold. If you sell only one extra home a year using this technique, isn't the seven dollar a month cost per website worth it? You bet.

Need music for an eCommerce site?
Check out Dano Music.
Sometimes you need some music for an eCommerce site or sales project.I'm using some of his music right now to create videos for this site. A large selection of free music, if you link back to his site, or a flat 10 dollar fee without a backlink. Royalty free. Thanks Dano!
Use audacity to cut the music to your presentation. Pretty easy application to use, with lots of support, and it's free. If you want MP3s, be sure to download LAME and install that too.

How to add site search to an eCommerce website
According to many experts, a website search function is important for
all the following reasons:
Improved
sales. Effective site search means better usability, so customers can find
things more quickly. This can translate into higher sales, as customers
who find what they are looking for easily are more likely to make a purchase,
while site search also offers opportunities for merchandising.
Higher
conversion rates. More intuitive search and navigation means higher
conversion rates.
Increased
site usage. A better user experience means that customers are more likely
to spend more time on the site, and can boost the number of registrations and
return visits.
Improved
customer retention and loyalty
. More loyalty as customers know they can find
products more easily.
Improved
branding
. Improving
user experience means more customer satisfaction, and a better customer journey
compared to competitor websites.
.
Google offers a custom search
engine for your site, for a price. It starts at $100 for 20,000
searches a year, if memory serves correct.

entrepreneurs? Please share your thoughts in the comments section.

Internet Explorer and anaZana
We recommend Firefox or Chrome for the best viewing experience of anaZana. We do not optimize anaZana for Internet Explorer, so if you are having poor results on IE, you now know why.
It's hard to say how many times IE has been used by hackers, but the latest attack was on June 12th, 2012. Anyway, Chrome and Firefox are used by 76% of our viewing audience, and we believe that by focusing on the main browsers for optimal viewing, we do the greatest number of people the greatest good.
I use both Chrome and Firefox, and have never been hacked (knock on wood). When I used IE, I had to reformat my entire drive multiple times from multiple attacks. That was my experience. If you insist on using IE, make you apply internet explorer patches as soon as they come out, and make sure your windows firewall is working and up to date.
Not to forget our Mac friends, I am told Safari works fine with anaZana. :)

Picture Bug
Pictures on the websites and background pictures disappeared.
A recent bug made it impossible to upload pictures and background images. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Someone contacted our support team about this issue, and we had it repaired within hours. Bugs are a common aspect of all programs, and if you find one, please contact support and explain in detail what the issue is, what OS you are using, what browser you are using, and when you first noticed the bug. We thank you for helping us to keep anaZana in tip-top working order!
To report a bug:
1) Login to anaZana.
2) Click on Support.
3) Try to search for the issue, to see if it has already been reported.
4) Explore the clickable buttons, Websites, Email, Domains, etc. for a specific issue: it may have already been addressed, and is not really a "bug" at all. :)
5) Finally, click on "Write to Support". Our team makes every effort to get back to you ASAP.
6) There is an opportunity to upload a screenshot of your issue. A picture says a thousand words, and what may be unclear becomes clear with a screenshot of your issue. To take a screenshot, press the Fn key and the Prt Sc key at the same time. Open any image program, and paste the image in a jpeg.

How do I publish a website with anaZana?
Publishing is easy.
Just make a payment of $7 for one month of publication. If you prefer, pay $84 for a year, and forget about it (until next year).
1) Login>Support>Websites>Payment>Payment Methods
2) Choose PAYPAL or CARD (VISA, MasterCard, Discover, JCB, Diners Club International)
Another way to pay: if you have accumulated enough anaZanas (the system unit of payment, 1 anaZana is equal to 1 US dollar), click on ANAZANA ACCOUNT. Use your anaZanas to make a payment... You earned it, probably while you slept! :) So use it...
Finally, after your payment method is completed, go back to Websites, and click on Pay. There is a good reason for this extra step. If you have multiple websites, or wish to purchase a domain, anaZanas work for any of these options.
